If you suspect the condenser is going bad, you can sometimes tell by watching the engine run while it is in idle. Unfortunately, the answer to each of these is “it depends”. The bad caps from the plague go bad even with constant use, and they typically show up as bulging cans. The load is too great, and usually the transformer blows to protect the line fuse, instead of the other way around. A bad motor capacitor may cause starting problems or could shut off the motor while running.
